Celebrating Theological Diversity
at UUSIC |
|
The UUSIC
diversity project, “Celebrating Our Theological
Diversity,” has begun.
Three UU
principles are especially relevant to this
discussion of theological diversity within our
congregation, calling on UUs to affirm and
promote:
|
|
Equally
relevant is our own UUSIC mission statement,
at right. |
We are a
caring, inclusive community, celebrating a liberal
tradition
that nurtures social justice, stewardship
of the earth, and our lifelong journeys of mind and
spirit.
UUSIC Mission Statement |

On June 6, 2010 the
Sunday service
was a
panel discussion (MP3),
"Celebrating Our
Theological
Diversity," moderated
by Reverend Maucere.
Panel members Karen
Fox, Stephen Locher,
Caryl Lyons, and David
Tokuhisa shared their theologies and how
these beliefs inform
their daily lives.
Our congregation then
discussed theological
diversity at UUSIC
during three forums
this summer. These
forums were held
following Sunday
services on June 6,
July 25, and August
15. During these forums, we
explored our beliefs
as we talked about: |
-
Why we care about
theological
diversity
-
Whether UUSIC is a
place where all
feel safe
discussing what
they believe
-
Times people felt
their beliefs were
not respected, and
how they responded
-
What we can do to
make theological
diversity an even
greater source of
energy and
learning at UUSIC
Summaries of these
discussions are

Defining "theology"
While
the root words of the
...term theology
refer to “reason or
discourse about God,”
...in modern usage,
[it] is understood to
include the full range
of religious and
philosophical beliefs
(not just theistic
ones) and human
understanding of the
meaning and purpose of
life...
