UUSIC
Secular Humanists
September 2010
The UUSIC Secular Humanists meet
at 7:30 PM in the Fireside Room on the third Tuesday of the month,
August through May.
For our
September meeting this year, we
will watch “Collision,” a
90-minute documentary featuring
author Christopher Hitchens and
evangelical theologian Douglas
Wilson.
In 2007, Wilson
and Hitchens began debating “Is
Christianity Good for the World?”
in a series of articles published
in
Christianity
Today. The articles
were collected into a book, and
when Hitchens and Wilson set out
on a tour to promote this book, a
film crew accompanied them. The
result is the thought-provoking
documentary called “Collision.”
All are welcome! |
The
seven principles
of Unitarian Universalism call upon UUs to engage in a
"a free and
responsible search for truth and meaning,"
and acknowledge many
sources, among them:
Humanist teachings which
counsel us to heed the guidance of reason and
the results of science, and warn us against
idolatries of the mind and spirit.
Now beginning our sixth year, UUSIC
Secular Humanists usually meet from September
through May, but this year we are going to
also meet informally through the summer
(see above).
From August through May, we gather on the third
Tuesday of each month at 7:30 PM in the
Fireside Room at UUSIC. Participants
include UUSIC members, friends, and
visitors who variously identify
themselves as religious humanists,
secular humanists, freethinkers,
agnostics, atheists, and skeptics -- all
are welcome!
During the past year, our monthly
gatherings have addressed Darwin's impact
at Cambridge and beyond; whether or not
having a UUSIC secular humanists group is
"an oxymoron"; the character of the Hebrew
God portrayed in the Old Testament; and
the controversy surrounding a Freedom
from Religion ad in the fall issue of
UU World. In May, as a fundraiser for
UUSIC, we sponsored
"Dinner with Darwin," a
dinner theater event.
If you would like to
receive meeting announcements and materials,
email us
with the words "UUSIC
Secular Humanists" in the message line,
and ask to have your
name added to the UUSIC Secular
Humanists email list.
