Social
Justice Coordinating Committee
What we do
The Social Justice Coordinating
Committee (SJCC) coordinates our congregation’s
community service and social action
activities in Iowa City and beyond,
supporting such organizations as the
Johnson County Crisis Center, Emma
Goldman Clinic, Domestic Violence
Intervention Program (DVIP), Shelter
House, United Action for Youth (UAY),
Free Medical and Dental Clinics, and
others, including some international
aid projects.
Using a democratic
process, our congregation periodically
votes to select the organizations
(some of which are listed above) whose
work we wish to support. One
organization is highlighted each month
and receives all Sunday cash donations
and designated checks for that month.

August's Social Justice Focus
Elder Services
Elder Services helps older adults who are trying to remain in their homes by providing chore and companionship services, care management services, and assistance to older adults at risk of neglect or abuse. Elder Services also provides support and counseling to caregivers. Nutritious meals for seniors are available through the congregate meal program and meals on wheels. The RSVP program matches volunteers over age 55 with community needs. Elder Services operates under the umbrella of United Way of Johnson County.. |
SJCC Table
SJCC members frequently staff an
action table in Channing Hall during
coffee hour between Sunday services.
Here UUs may write letters or
postcards to inform state and
Congressional lawmakers about such
issues as marriage equality and
homelessness. Our concerns also
include human rights violations and
needed humanitarian efforts. In
addition, the SJCC table highlights
current events and activities,
inviting congregational participation.
