Lunch and Learn

Lunch and Learn on Sunday, December 8, focuses on Immigration.  This topic will be an unignorable issue in the coming months.  Come after the service for a Cuban lunch and hear our friends, Carmen, Klaus, and Gregorio relate their immigrant stories.  What are the possibilities for our beloved community of immigrants and children of immigrants?  How will we be called to respond?  Together we will explore the possibilities.  Join us!

Circle of Friends

Play Santa? As giving is part of our collective tradition, the Action Team offers an opportunity to give holiday gifts to children and parents who are immigrants. A Sign-up Genius makes it easy to commit to bringing a gift either on Sunday, December 8, 15th, or 22nd. Each gift should be labeled clearly and unwrapped. Gifts of cash or fruit are also welcome.

December Day of Service

For our Day of Service, on Sunday, December 22, after worship, everyone is invited for a sorting, gift-wrapping, and basket-filling Day of Service. Gift wrap and ribbons will be provided. An elf will be bringing cookies! Volunteers will deliver the well-wrapped and generous gifts.

Weaving Sale

Griselda, an expert artisan and part of a legendary Guatemalan community of weavers, will again be offering her weavings, jewelry, and beaded handiwork for sale at UU Society. Look for her in the Fellowship Hall on Sunday, December 8 and 22 after the service.  She would love to show you her lovely, handcrafted items.

UUS Sponsorships

While Carmen and Yoel are pretty well settled in their own apartment, they recently added a family member to Iowa City.  Carmen’s son Lázaro and his partner Yeneys have arrived after traveling from Cuba and crossing the border to Arizona. John Cunningham, UUS member, is providing housing, but they could use help with applications, rides on Sunday, and donations of clothing. Should anyone be interested in assisting with this newly arrived couple, contact Sally Hartman (sallyahartman@hotmail.com).

Center for Worker Justice

The Allies Program at the Center for Worker Justice offers insight into such issues as income inequality, housing challenges, and wage theft.  Consider joining this important group for their next meeting on Friday, December 13 at noon.  Learn about the needs in the community and how agencies, nonprofits, and churches can work together to address those needs.  Meet virtual or in person at the Center for Worker Justice located at 1556 South 1st Avenue, #C.  This address is in the back of a building next to Wendy’s Restaurant on 1st Avenue.  A zoom link will be included in the UUS Wednesday Updates on December 11. Did you read about the elf with the cookies, above?  The same elf is committed to baking more cookies for this meeting!

Social Justice Team December Meeting

Join the Social Justice Team in their regular, second Tuesday meeting on December 10 at 7 pm.  The members will be meeting via zoom through February.  Our “Hot Topic” for that day will be discussing social justice initiatives from the Climate Justice Revival held November 16.  Other agenda items include the December Day of Service Holiday gift-giving, a guest speaker from the Pheasant Ridge tutoring project, and planning for the January and February Days of Service.  Of course, we will add your item to the agenda!  For more information, contact Sally Hartman (sallyahartman@hotmail.com).  All are welcome!
