Free Lunch Report for July 2024
Submitted by Vicki Siefers
The cornerstone of the Free Lunch Program is “an open door, a full plate and no questions asked.” Since 1986 UUS has been providing the meal at 1105 Gilbert Court on the second Friday of every month. In the past many people (Diana Miller, Carmen Griggs, Sue Eberly, Mark Yuskis, Sally Hartman, Gay Mikelson, and Bonnie Penno to name just a few) have served as leaders for the team and volunteers baked casseroles at home and brought them to the location.
Since January 2023, the leadership team of Bob Littlehale, Vicki Siefers, and Frank Wildensee have selected the menu and purchased the food for the main dish from our fund at UUS. A Sign-Up Genius email is sent to the volunteer list for signups to help prepare the main dish and for volunteers to bring salad, fruit, and desserts for our green salad, fruit salad and desserts which are served along with the main dish. Volunteers come in to work 1-2 hour shifts preparing food, chopping fruit and veggies, serving the meal and cleaning up. Everyone has a good time working together to put the meal on. You can also donate funds to cover the
cost of the main dish.
Usually between $130-$180 is spent on the ingredients and in the past funds have been donated in memory or honor of UUS members and friends. If you have any good ideas or recipes for large crowds we are always on the lookout for healthy recipes that are easy to prepare so send us a shout at freelunch@uusic.org.
As we move forward, we salute Bob Littlehale, who will be stepping back from leadership duties but will still remain involved as a volunteer. Thank you Bob for keeping us going during the pandemic and post pandemic years!
